The Shed Blood of the Atonement Part 1

The needed intercessor: (Job 9:1-2, 28, 32-33) Job knew he was not able to approach God on his own. He needed a daysman to reconcile him to God. Job’s knowledge of God brought fear to him. His knowledge also brought comfort (Job 19:24-27)

God provided daysmen to intercede and reconcile the people of the nation of Israel to Himself through the sacrificial system under the law.  These daysmen were the Levitical priesthood.

·       The sin offering was for the act; the trespass offering was because their sin was against God

·       Lev 4:20; 5:18; Num 15:25-28 When the priest made an atonement for the man the sin was forgiven. The sprinkling of the blood by the priest was the making of the atonement.

·       These atonements were for one sin of ignorance - one time, short term reconciliation to God.

·       Lev 9:7, Heb 7:27 Made an atonement daily for himself and an atonement daily for the sins of the people by sprinkling the blood of the sacrifices upon the altar of incense.

·       There was one more part of this atonement. The iniquity (evilness) of the sin had to be removed from the man.

·       (Ex 28:36-38) HOLINESS TO THE LORD: The iniquity would be removed from the one making the offering and go upon the high priest who would also bear the iniquity of the holy things offered for sacrifice by the people..

·       Every day more and more iniquity would be placed upon the high priest. The high priest was much more than the common man. He had to be HOLINESS TO THE LORD.

“Day of Atonement” the day the iniquity of the holy things is removed; once Every Year. Leviticus 16, Heb 9:7

·       1st The high priest made an atonement for himself [Killed the bullock and sprinkled it’s blood around and upon the mercy seat] The high priest had to be reconciled to God before he could make an atonement for congregation.

·       2nd made an atonement for the congregation [killed the goat and sprinkled it’s blood around and upon the mercy seat].

·       3rd The priest would than place his hand upon the scapegoat and the iniquity of the holy things would go from him to the goat and the scapegoat would be lead into he wilderness by the “hand of a fit hand” and released to carry iniquity into the a land not inhabited (Lev 16:20-22).

Isa 43:23-24 Their sin weighed heavy upon the LORD’s heart.

Isa 59:2-3 As the sacrificial system became polluted and the wickedness of the people became so great God could no longer look upon them and would not hear them. No hope for atonement through the priests. Their iniquity was now upon them and not born upon the high priest.

The atonement we received through Jesus Christ had to be made in a way that would fulfilled the law.

John 10:30; 17:11, 21,22 The oneness of the Father and The Son

·       2Cor 5:19 When they nailed Jesus Christ, the Son of God upon the cross all the sin of the world (both past and future) had come into and upon Him. When the Father looked at Him all that He saw was the sin.

Ø    Mat 27:46, Mark 15:34 at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” The oneness was broken.

Ø    In Mark 14:36 before He was nailed to the cross the cry Abba Father” was heard Heb 5:7

Ø    Upon the cross The Father could not look upon Him and the cry “My God, My God” went unheard (Isa 59:2-3) There was at that time a separation between the Father and the Son; enmity between them because He had been made to be sin for us.

Luke 23:46, John 19:30 When Jesus cried “It is finished” and gave up the ghost. The sacrifice complete; the blood had been shed for the remission of sin; the body, that holy thing died paying the penalty for sin. BUT, the reconciliation was not completed

1st An atonement had to be made for himself before He could make an atonement for the sins of the world, our sin. Jesus had to be reconciled back to his God through the atonement by the sprinkling of his blood by the High Priest.

·       Where was this atonement made? Heb 8:2-4, 9:11, 24 In the true tabernacle He pitched above.

·       Who made the atonement? Only the priest of the most high God, King of righteousness, King of Peace, who abideth a priest continually (Heb 7:3) could enter the tabernacle not made with hands:

Ø    After He said “It is finished” (John 19:30) and gave up the Ghost and while the body still was nailed to the cross, I believe “The Word” (John 1:1) left that body and as Melchisedec, the priest of the most high God, ascended to the tabernacle not made with hands with some of the blood of that body and sprinkled it before and upon the true mercy seat, making an atonement and reconciled that body, the Son of God, to His to God and His Father..

Ø    After atonement was made for that body. Then when that body was taken down from upon the cross and placed in the tomb Jesus Christ descended into the heart of the earth (Mat 12:41) and on the third day He rose from the dead as the priest of the most high God after the order of Melchisedec.

He was not through: Our atonement was not complete.
