The Joy That Was Set before Him

Luke 22:42-44 (44) And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

[Jesus knew everything he would face going his death on the cross.]

Hebrews 12:1-2 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

[Christ’s death led to joy that was set before him as he sits in heaven.]

**The Joy set before Him

Luke 24:24-26 (26) Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

1Peter 1:9-11 (11) Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

***As Christ faced the cross He knew the joy he world experience sitting at the right hand of His Father with the glory He had throughout eternity past.

Hebrews 1:1-3 (3) Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

***More joy set before Him

1Peter 1:7-8 (8) Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

1Peter 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

The joy Set before Christ is the joy we have in Him.

(Knowing Him as savior and will have when we see him His glory.)

****Still More joy set before Him

Colossians 1:21-22 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

**Does this verse teach the angels rejoice when a sinner repents? NO

**It teaches there is joy in their presence. They are in the presence of joy.

Who’s exceeding joy is spoken of in Jude 1:24?  Christ's

Who’s exceeding joy is before the angels? Christ's

Our exceeding, unspeakable joy is actually the exceeding joy Christ has in our salvation that is transferred to us. Words cannot explain how this can be accomplished.

It is Christ’s joy that is in the presence of the angels when a sinner repents.

That joy that was set before him is also the exceeding joy He has when He presents a sinner saved by grace perfect before the throne of God.

Jesus Christ endured the cross and has entered into His glory He knew of the exceeding joy He would have when He would sit us at the right hand of the father in Him

All who know Christ as savior are partakers of His glory.

All who know Christ as savior are partakers of His joy.

Ephesians 2:4-7 (6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Where is Christ seated today? At the right hand of  the Father

We are in Christ so where are we seated in Christ at the right hand of the The Father . . . TODAY!

2Corinthians 9:14 And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.

2Cointhians 9:6-15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

1Peter 1:6 ¶ Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

Joy is the comfort in knowing that regardless of the circumstance you are in, all is well between the Lord and you.

Palms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Psalm 43:4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

Psalm 43:4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

Matthew 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

Psalm 48:2 Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

Why is our joy unspeakable? Why is our joy full of glory? Why is our joy exceeding?

Because we have joy of Christ in us, we have the glory of the Christ in us through the unspeakable gift of God’s grace in us.

The Joy That Was Set before Him (Wednesday Evening Bible Study)

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

Luke 22:41-44 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

There was nothing Christ went through on His way to die on the cross that took Him by surprise!

Before He took upon a body Christ never experienced:

Hunger * Pain * Being Alone * Being Physically Tired

Before the cross He understood what they were – after the cross had experiences them physically.

Hebrews presents Him as the better high priest

The LORD God Almighty, maker and redeemer of Israel was going to experience Shame.

In spite of knowing what shame is, Jesus allowed Himself to suffer the shame of being stripped naked and nailed to the cross and looked upon by the crowd as no better than any other sinful criminal who was ever crucified.

Hebrews 12:1-4 – Christ willingly endured the cross (resisted unto blood, striving against sin - Luke 22:44) and suffered shame –

Why? For the joy that was set before Him!

The joy that was set before Him.

Hebrews 12: 3 .  .   is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The joy that was set before him The glory that should follow

**The joy that was set before Him

1Peter 1:7-8 * 1Peter 4:13

Who has exceeding, unspeakable joy full of Glory?

Why is our joy exceeding, unspeakable, full of glorry?

***The joy that was set before Him

Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

**Does this verse teach the angels rejoice when a sinner repents?  NO

In Luke 15:1-6 &  8-9 Who rejoiced over the lost sheep and lost coin that were found?

The shepherd and the one who owned the coin.

Luke 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

Who’s  joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth? CHRIST'S

Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Christ despised the shame and endured the cross for the exceeding joy He has when he presents a believer faultless at the right hand of the Father.

This exceeding joy of Christ is the joy in the presence of the angels when one sinner repents.

The joy we have in Christ was set before Him

Our exceeding, unspeakable joy, full of glory

Matthew 2:1-10  they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. The wise men had come to the place of the King.

Why did they go first to Jerusalem?

Psalm 48:2 Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

Joy of the whole earth is where the great King would be.

2Corinthians 1:21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

We are in Christ and Christ is in us. We are seated in the presence of the Majesty on high in Christ.

*Our unspeakable joy, full of glory is Christ in us , The expresses image of God - our hope of glory –

*Our exceeding joy is Christ in us -  as he set us on the right hand of the Father with the glory He had before the world began. 1Peter 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

Psalm 43:4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

In Christ we are in the presence of the King – O my God, our exceeding joy!

The way Holy Spirits helps to us experience His exceeding Joy.

·        Read and study the Bible - 1Jo 1:4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. While this is specifically about 1John it can be applied to the entire Bible. (Obey what you learn)

·        Be here for the preaching of the word – 2Cor 9:14-15 – I believe Pastor Jim has received the unspeakable gift of exceeding grace for the ministering of the word.
