Chapter 10 Part 1              March 7, 2021

In Chapters 9-11 Paul is teaching the Gentile Christians in Rome about Jewish Christians and the nation of Israel. The Gentile Christians only knew salvation by grace through faith; they knew nothing about keeping the law. No Jew has been saved by keeping the law.

Chapter 10:1 Paul was not speaking of the (O.T.) Jews who died before Christ's death, burial, and resurrection when he said he desired all Jews be saved. Paul knew most N.T. Jews were not saved. Why? See V2

V2a- For they have a zeal of God V2b- But that zeal was not based upon knowledge. Knowledge of what? See V3

V3a- For they were ignorant of God's righteousness. Why?

·        De 6:6-7, 17 Fathers were to diligently teach the words of the LORD to their children and they were to diligently keep them.

·        Psalm 78:4-8

·        Why? Fathers failed to teach their children that "God is righteous your not". The greed and wickedness of Israel led to from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever. (Micah 2:9)

·        New Testament Jews had been robbed of the knowledge of God's righteousness by the generations  who came before them

V3b- They (N.T. Jews) established their own righteousness

·        Matthew 5:20,

·        Romans 9:31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.

·        Malachi 1:13, 3:13-15,

V3c- Israel never believed they needed God's righteousness.

Submitting to God's righteousness is this

1.     Confessing this Isaiah 64:6 ¶ But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; .  .  .

2.     Believing you must have God's righteousness imputed or accounted unto yourself (Genesis 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. James 2:23)

***Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

3.     The N.T Jew must realize this happens only through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Why? Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Why didn't most N.T. Jews submit to God's righteousness?

V4 - For Israel never believed Christ fulfilled the demands of the law.

·        Galatians 3:13 Christ was made a curse for us

·        2Corinthians 5:21 Christ was made him to be sin for us

·        See Galatians 4:4-5 Titus 3:5

·        Matthew 5:18 one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 5:17 Christ came to do just that

·        Those who believe in Christ have attained the righteousness of the law through Christ and the righteousness of God.

Why did Christ have to fulfill the law? See V5

V5- If you seek to gain righteousness through keeping the law you must live by ever jot and tittle of the law. Both the letter and the spirit.

·        Mal 1:13 Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.

·        The O.T. Jews never lived by what was in the law and the N.T Jews couldn't either.

·        Christ had to fulfill every jot and tittle of the law because no other man colud!

V6-7 Today by faith those who have God's righteousness accounted unto them believe by faith in the one and only death, burial and resurrection. His finished work upon the cross. When Christ said "it is finished" he gave up the ghost. Remember Matthew 5:18

·        1Co 1:22a states, "For the Jews require a sign". The nation of Israel is still looking for their Messiah to come.

Those who choose to seek righteousness by the law are ignorant of the knowledge of God's righteousness and must live by the law. They are saying Christ's first death, burial and resurrection was not sufficient. He must do it again.
