Chapter 9-11 Part 4              March 7, 2021

Chapter 9 Righteousness comes by faith only. Paul teaches the Gentile Christians more Israel and the Jews. There will be a remnant of the Jew called Gods people.

Chapter 10:1-7  While Paul desires all Jews be saved, those who choose to seek righteousness by the law are ignorant of the knowledge of God and must live by the law. They are saying Christ's first death, burial and resurrection was not sufficient. He must do it again.

V10:8-13 The word of faith Paul preaches: it is the same for both Jews and Gentiles. Jude 1:3

·        V9-11 The word of faith that will lead to salvation is seen in these are verses. Believe by faith in Jesus Christ of the Bible and His work upon the cross and His resurrection

·        V11: not be ashamed:2Tim 1:2,15; 1John2:28; Heb 4:6

V14-17 The Gospel must be heard before it is believed. Matthew 28:19-20

·        1Corinthians 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; See Isa 53:1

·        See 11:8 with Isaiah 6:9-10

V18 The Jews who do not believe have no excuse it was heard throughout the world See Acts 2; Col 1:5-6

V10:19-20 The Jews knew the LORD was going to use Gentiles to draw the Jews to him through jealously (Deuteronomy 32:21, Isaiah 65:1)

V10:21a The "but to Israel" Spread out my hands all the day long Isa 65:2

·        Isaiah 1:2 The Jews are called nurtured children by the LORD

·        Hebrews 2:17 Their Messiah was made like a Jewish man (his brethren) so He could be their high priest who would make reconciliation for their sins according to the just demands of God.

V21b Gainsaying: Contradicting, denying, opposing. The perfect description of the nation and the people of Israel.

V2-5 God has always preserved  a remnant of Israel for Himself in the past and will during the Church age (V5). the time of the election of grace

V6-7 Romans 9:31 - 10:3; 2Corinthians 3:14, 1Peter 1:2 There is a remnant of the Jews who are going to be the election of grace among the Jews because they by grace through faith unto obedience of the Gospel.

All, both Jews and Gentiles. who accept Jesus Christ as their savior by faith in His finished work upon the cross are part of the election of faith

The nation seeks the promises made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob

The saved Jews have already received what they sought after.

So have we saved Gentiles. We have received what we sought after!

V8  God made it harder for the Jews to hear the truth of the Gospel when they heard the Gospel. The spirit of slumber would cause them to be as if they would sleep through the preaching of the word of faith, the gospel.

V9-10 When Jesus Christ came and went to the cross Israel as a nation rejected every teaching in the Old Testament concerning Jesus Christ even the Passover table. They stumbled over the true memorial in the Passover table and how it pointed to their Redeemer, the Lamb of God.

See Deuteronomy 29:4 with 29:19-20; Psalm 69:23

·        The Jews thought the Passover was about the redeemed instead of the Redeemer.

V10 God has darkened their eyes and instead of bowing toward God in worship they lean away from Him as one might do to avoid a threatening person, saying stay away. The Jews did not want the Christ who died for their sins.

V11. What is the stumbling block of the Jews. 1Corinthians 1:23

The Jews were not going to seek to reconcile the world unto God. (Matthew 28:18-20). They were not going to spread the gospel to the Gentiles or other Jews. It was though their fall the word of reconciliation (2Co 5:19) came to the Gentile local N.T. churches. Salvation was offered to the Gentiles so some Jews might be saved through their jealously of the Gentiles relationship with their God.

Paul was teaching the Gentile Christians in Rome

·        The Jews are his brethren in the flesh and he wished they were his brethren in Christ.

·        The Jews would not give the gospel to other Jews or gentiles

·        The power to reconcile the world to God was taken from the Jews and given to Gentile Christians, local churches.

·        It was necessary that the gospel to go to the Gentiles so some Jews might be saved.

·        Do not hold to the idea that God is through with the Jews and view them as unsavable.
