Chapters 7 & 8 Part 2      October 18,  2020

"The law" is seen in 14 verses of chapter 7

The just and good commandments of the law taught that sin is exceeding sinful. V14 teaches the law is spiritual. Paul is not talking about a battle between our spirit and the law. That battle was won for us.

V14-22 Paul teaches the baby Christians in Rome that there is a battle going on between that which is carnal and that which spirit.

V15-20 The battle: the inward man and the body of flesh

·        The inward man: 1Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

·        V16-21 It is not the inward man that sins. The wrong a Christuan does is the sin that is in our flesh, coming out.

·        V17-18 Sin dwelleth in our body of flesh, V23 in my members,

V21 There is another law apart from tthe law of just and good commandments. That is when ever Christians want to do good evil is right there with them. See John 17:15 (not the evil one, the evil of V21)

V22 The inward man delights in the law of God (the just and good commandments.

·        Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

·        It is not a battle against our flesh and the law; our exceeding sinful flesh is lusting after control of the inward man where the Spirit dwells. The Holy Spirit has already won that battle sin cannot enter where the Spirit of God dwells. We could not win that battle on our own.

V23 The law seen in V21 is in every member of the body of flesh

·        See Matthew 18:8-9 and Mark 9:43-47  

·        This is the law of sin; we can't get away from sin.

V24 The question of this verse is answered in V8:1-2 The law of the Spirit of life in Christ. We could not win the law of sin and death, Only Christ.

V25, 8:6-7,27; 12:2 The Christian must fight the war of the mind

·        Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

·        1Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
