Romans Chapter 4

 

Romans 4:1 ¶ What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

·        our father, as pertaining to the flesh: Continued writing to the Jewish Christians

 

V2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

·        Romans 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

 

V3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

·        Genesis 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

·        Galatians 3:6 ¶ Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

·        James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

·        This is said of others: Phinehas the  grandson of Aaron Read Numbers 25 with Psalm 106:29-31

·        Of David Psalm 32-1-2

 

V4  with Romans 11:6 If one is able to attain the righteousness of God through works than God would be obligated to impute His righteousness only to those who earned it.

·        Since everyone has come short of God's glory the imputation of His righteousness can only by grace and mercy.

·        God's does not owe man anything certainly not His righteousness.

 

V5-8 The Faith of Abraham is the same the faith of David.

·        The faith leads to God imputing righteousness and not imputing sin to an individual

Ø     That is Paying one what he is not worthy of, God's righteousness instead of paying one what he is worthy is worthy of: the wages of sin which is known by everyone to be death (Romans 1:32)

·        Both Abraham and David did not deserve God's grace. They did not earn God's righteousness. Their sin did not cause their salvation to be taken away, (Psalm 51:1)

 

V9-22 The blessing of God accounting His righteousness by grace through faith to one who believes is not just for the Jews only.

 

·        This blessing came upon Abraham before the law and before he was circumcised. Abraham was not a Jew. Do not forget those mentioned in Hebrews 11 Able, Enoch, and Noah all came before Abraham and  Hebrews 11:13 states they died in faith.

 

The faith of Abraham was this: Romans 4:20-21  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

The outcome of his faith: Romans 4:22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

 

Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Romans 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

 

 

V23-25 Paul states the account of the faith of Abraham was not written just for Abraham. It was for the Christians at the dawn of the church age, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile and for Paul himself. Paul needed this account just as much as any other Christian.

V23 But for us also - you and me

·        Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

·        Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

·        1John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

·        It was written so all who have by faith believed in the just and justified are justified. AMEN

 

The faith Abraham is the same faith as the faith of David. The faith of David is the sane faith as the faith of Noah.

The faith of Noah is the same faith as The faith of  Your Name
