Chapter 3 Part 2 August 23, 2020 The hypocrisy of the Jews continued

V5-9 In V9 showed he was still addressing the hypocrisy of the Jews in V5-8. He asks are we better than they?

·        We = the Jews; They = the Gentiles

·        Paul addressed the self-righteousness or superiority complex of the Jews. (2:17-20) As sons of Abraham and the ones given the law they have first claim to God they are superior to the Gentiles so they should be the teachers of the gentiles. They claim righteousness because they are Jews. Oh hypocrites "Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy". Luke 12:1

·        Self-righteousness is self-unrighteousness

Paul uses questions to prove

·        Good can not come from their evil

·        God can not be glorified through their unrighteousness

·        They can not boast of God while abounding in sin

V5-6 If the unrighteousness of the Jews has the ability to commend, (speak favorably of, or promote) His judgment would be unrighteous.

V7-8 Paul makes it personal. If through lying he was a witness to Christ than how could he be judged a sinner. Romans 3:23 could not be true.

·        Job 40:8 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?

Ø     The make yourself seem righteous you must first make the righteousness of the LORD appear to be unrighteousness in your eyes and the eyes of others.

·        Job 40:9-14 The LORD made it clear to Job that you have to be equal to the LORD to save yourself.

Can a lifestyle of Hypocrisy and or unrighteousness present God favorably to the world? The answer is God forbid

Here is the only way man can commend God to others:

·        2Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

·        Philippians 3:9 ¶ And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

·        We can commend God and Christ to others only through the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Only those in Christ can show Christ favorably in this world.

·        My unrighteousness can not commend or testify of Jesus Christ. My testimony must be it took the perfectly righteousness Jesus Christ to pay the penalty and remove my unrighteousness before God and make me the righteousness of God in Him

V9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

V10-19 All unsaved are seen in these verses; those who hold the truth in unrighteousness (V1:17) Also Christian before they were saved.

Note: V11 on our own we would never have come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. We come to God by the measure of faith given to all men through the leading of the Holy Spirit

·        John 15:26 ¶ But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

V20 Justification could not come through doing what the law said to do.

·        Deeds are physical; the law is spiritual

·        No old testament sacrifice rose from the dead

V21-26 one sentence

·        V21 But now (when this epistle was penned and TODAY) the righteousness of God is clearly seen with out the law.

Ø     See 1:19-20 knowledge of God is clearly known by all men

Ø     But now: Hebrews 1:1-1 with 2Peter 1:19

·        V22 the rightness of God that is made manifest will come unto all who believe. Again 2Corinthians 5:21 and Philippians 3:9

·        V22 (with V9) V29 But now why is there no difference between Christian Jews and Christian Gentiles,  because V22 . But now there is also no difference between the unsaved Jews and unsaved Gentiles the righteousness of God is made manifest to them also.

·        V24-26 Why is Jesus Christ the just the justifies of all who believe and the propitiation for the sins of all the world; because of His shed blood and the measure of faith given to all men.

Ø     Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:  See Leviticus 16:15 Jesus Christ shed Hid blood for all people.

Ø     Something to think about: 2Corinthians 5:21 states Jesus Christ was made to be sin for us. When the crown of thorns was platted upon the head of Christ, what was our sin covered with when He was nailed to the cross?  ____ __________ ____ ______________

·        V27-29 Where is the boasting: the measure of faith that is given to all men.

·        V30 When we through the measure of faith believe "ye must be born again" we acknowledge to God the law is true.

Romans 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, (the measure of faith)

Similar "to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile" (1:16, 2:9,10)
