Romans lesson 08 Chapter 2 Part 3 Chapter 2:5

Read verses 5-11

Paul presents a contrast between the saved and lost. (Romans 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.)

Note the contrast between Vs 5,6, 8, 9 and Vs 7,10.

Romans 2:5-6, 8-9  But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

Vs8-9 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile

The day of wrath

*Proverbs 11:4a ¶ Riches profit not in the day of wrath: .  .  .  .

*Zephaniah 1:15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

*Revelation 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

*Revelation 6:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

*Revelation 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

**The seven year Tribulation

**All who are brought before the Lord at The Great white Throne Judgment will be sent into the eternal lake of fire.

Vs7& 10 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

*1Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

*1Thessalonians 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

*Proverbs 11:4¶ Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

*Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

V2:11 explains to the Jew first and then the Geek (or Gentile)

*All men (the O man) will stand before the Lord at the judgment seat of Christ or at the great white throne as he judges their deeds upon the earth.

*The judgment faced will be determined by the Gospel (V16)

Read V2:12-15 with Ephesians 3:8-9

Note: The law is summed up in Matthew 22:37-40 (Mark 12:30; Luke) which is the summation of the ten commandments. The statutes dealing with the offerings, feasts, and sabbath days deal with man's relationship with God; many of the other statutes deal with man's relationship with man. While the law is physical in appearance it is spiritual in nature (Romans 7:14)

V12 adds to verse 11and the "Jew first and also the gentile".

*Those without the law: the Gentile (the law was not given to the Gentiles)

*Those under the law: the Jew (had the law given to them so they were under the law)

*Both are without excuse (V1:20)

V13 to those who are under the law (the Jews because they had the law given to them) can only be saved by doing the law

*Paul taught in Romans 7:14 the law is spiritual so doing the law physically was not keeping the law. They had to do the law spiritually to be justified in the eyes of God.

*See V1:29 there is a letter of the law written on tables of stone. There is also the spirit of the law that must be written in the heart to be justified.

Vs14-15 - Even though the Gentiles were not given the law, as were the Jews, the knowledge of good and evil was written within them. By doing some good the Gentile proves he has that knowledge and that they are without excuse because the work of God's law is written in their hearts (V1:20). The Gentile will be judge others by his own law and his standard to judge himself and others is not what God said is good and evil but what the Gentile thinks is good and evil.

*The problem with the thoughts of man as the standard for judging: It is good for me to do it, but it is evil if you do it; it is good if George does it but it is evil if Oscar does it.

*Isaiah 32:6 For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

*Titus 1:15-16 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
