Romans Lesson 3: Chapter 1:5-14
V5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship,
The whom: the Son of God through the power of the Holy Spirit
The we: Paul and the apostles
for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Paul and the apostles
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
God had for purpose for extending His grace and apostleship to them. Matthew 29:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
They sent the gospel throughout the world FOR HIS NAME.
Paul knew he was called and taught by Jesus Christ for the purpose of giving glory to the name of Jesus by seeing that the true gospel was spread to all nations. 1Timothy 1:11
V6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
The ye: the Christians in Rome, all Christians today, including us.
1Corinthians 7:22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.
All Christians are called in the Lord, recipients of God's grace through faith unto obedience of the gospel, separated unto the gospel and free to serve Christ Jesus in the spreading of the gospel for His Name.
1Corinthians 1:9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 1Thessolians 5:23-24
V7 To all that be in Rome,
beloved of God,
called to be saints (a saint is any person to whom God has accounted his righteousness unto while alive on this earth for ever)
1Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
Romans 8:29-30 (often used to teach the false concept of predestination. More on this in a later lesson) goes with both Vs 6 & 7. When you add Ephesians 1:7-14 it becomes clear that God predestinated (foreordained) that all who call upon the name of the Lord unto obedience of the gospel shall be conformed to the image of his dear Son for the praise of his glory.
Vs 8-9 Paul did not start the church in Rome. He was not the only one who was preaching the gospel once delivered to him by the risen Lord. Paul did have a part in the truth that was being preached. Paul was praying for these Christians in Rome thanking God for their worldwide testimony. The church in Rome did not have the Internet. Could it be their faith was seen in their sending and supporting of missionaries.
Paul discipleship: Teaching pastors
Acts 15:35, 18:11
Acts 20:17-38 To elders (pastors see Acts 27:17 with verse 28)
Paul has had a part in every local church that has been started upon the truth of the gospel. Our church in included.
Vs10-15 What Paul was separated unto; why he wanted to go to Rome
V11 - To impart unto them some spiritual gift: Paul knew passing his knowledge of God's truth in giving a spiritual gift to others.
V15 - To preach the gospel to Christians that were in Rome also. Preaching the gospel to Christians is not teaching ye must be born again but is teaching what happens when you are born again and what it means to be born again.
V11- To established them in the truth. Read Ephesians 4:14-16 with 1Corinthians 15:58. Paul had the same desire for Christians in Rome that he had for the church in Ephesus and Corinth: they are to be so grounded in the truth that they were unable to be deceived by cunning men into believing false doctrine.
V12 - Paul desired to have fellowship those of mutual faith. Christians should seek out Christians for fellowship. Paul's comfort zone was with other of the same faith as his.
V13 - The fruit desired to have among the Christians in Rome: #1 lead someone in Rome to Christ directly. #2 Teach them to teach others 2Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Philippians 4:17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
The ought to be that they ought to be: Hebrews 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
Vs13-14 - Could it be the church in Rome had expressed their disappointment in Paul's delay in coming to them. He expressed in verse 13 that it was his intension to go to them, but was led somewhere else. Could it be the Holy Spirit knew where Paul was to be and the exact time and manner that Paul was to go to Rome. He also had to responsibility to other Gentile churches to impart spiritual knowledge. From Lesson 1 Paul knew he was entrusted by the Lord Jesus Christ with the passing on the knowledge given him to all men.
*Question: Are you ought to be as you ought to be.
2Peter 3:11 ¶ Seeing then that all these
things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy
conversation and godliness,
3John 1:8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to
the truth.
