Leviticus 16: The offerings In A Nutshell

Part 1: The duties of the high priest

2V not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

·        The regular duties of Aaron, the high priest, did not take him into the most holy place very often.

·        The LORD was there and no one can stand before His throne unless called. The most holy place would be filled with His glory (See Exodus 40:34)

·        See Isaiah Chapter 6 - Isaiah was coming apart; the could not stand in the presence of the glory of the LORD without being destroyed. What had to happen before he could live in His presence? 

Ø     1: He confessed his condition before the LORD (V5)

Ø     2: Intercession had to be made (6)

Ø     3: His wickedness (iniquity) had to the taken away (V7)

Ø     4: His sins had to be cleansed (purged) (V7)(

 

The sacrifices in a nutshell - The Day Of Atonement

 

The oblations: the animals to be offered

For himself and his house (Vs 3, 6 & v24) V3 Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with

·        a young bullock for a sin offering

·        a ram for a burnt offering.

·        His house: his wife, his sons and their wives and children (tribe of Levi)

For he people V5 ¶ And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel

·        two kids of the goats for a sin offering

Ø     One to be killed

Ø     one for a scapegoat

·        one ram for a burnt offering.

 

The ceremony: the duties of the High priest

V17 Once the high priest entered the holy place of the tabernacle he was alone

·        Wash his flesh in water (V4)

·        Put on the holy garments (V4)

Ø     linen mitre, including the gold plate: HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD

·        He would kill his bullock of the sin offering for himself (6,11)

Enterd within the veil into the most holy place (first time)

·        Censor full of coals from the alter of incense and burns incense before the mercy seat so the mercy seat will be covered with the smoke. (Isaiah 6:4; Revelation 8:4, 15:8)

·        14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

Ø     East to west is going toward God - the only way man may approach God is through the blood

 

He came without from the veil

·        Present the two goats before the LORD and cast lots to determine which was the LORD;s for a sin offering for the people and which would be the scapegoat.

·        Kill the goat of the sin offering (V9, 15)

 

Entered within the veil the second time

·        Sprinkled the blood of the sin offering as ne did the blood of the bullock (V15)

 

He came without the veil (V16-190

·        V16-19 the high priest would make an atonement for the holy place

·        Why because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins

·        Put blood from the bullock for his sin offering and the goat for the sin offering of the people upon the horns of the alter of incense and sprinkle the blood upon the alter seven times.

·        Sprinkle blood upon the alter seven times.

 

The high priest would leave the holy place

·        Put his hand upon the head of the scapegoat and the iniquities of the people that the priest carried upon himself would be transferred the goat. The scapegoat would be lead

 

He would go back into the holy place

·        Remove his garments and wash his body and put on the holy garments

He would leave the tabernacle again

·        Offer the his ram and the ram for the people for burnt offerings

·        Atonement would be made for himself and the people (sprinkle blood upon the alter)

 

this ceremony: burnt offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering

The peace offering (V30-31) cleansed from the sins and a day of rest before the LORD

The meat offering for a memorial: remember the miter HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD.
