Jesus Christ the king of the Jews, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

“Son” does not always denote begotten by or directly fathered by. It is often used to link a man with someone who came before him   of the same nature or characteristics or in the line of (seed of). A man often claimed sons of sons as his sons. (Jacob, Shem)

Son of Abraham

·       Abraham: father of the Jews (Isaiah 51:2, Matt 3:9, Rom 4:1) (2Chr 2:7, Isa 41:8) (Luke 19:9 Zacchaeus was called by Jesus a son of Abraham)

·       David was not directly begotten of, or fathered by Abraham. Being a Jew David was a “son of Abraham”. Mat 1:2-6a is the line of the Abraham leading to Davis the king

·       Deu 17:15 All kings of Israel would be Jews the seed of Abraham

 

David was the chosen seed of Abraham by the LORD to be king and the line from which all future kings of the Jews would come,.

·       (2Samuel 7:16) (Deu 17:15)

·       Jer 23:5 From David’s seed the LORD will righteous Branch, and a King. (Like 1:32)

·       Ps 89:3-4, 35-37

 

Son of David, the king

Mat 1:6b-16 is the generations of the kings. The generations of the kings of Israel could be considered to be the generation of David.

·       This generation is the seed of David. [1Kings 11: 39 the seed of David is the generations of the kings.]

·       V16 Joseph is last in the generations of the kings, the seed of David. Mat 1:20 Joseph is declared the son of David.

·       If there was a true king in Israel at that time it could have been Joseph.

·       Luke 3:23 And Jesus himself .  .  . (as was supposed) the son of Joseph. Jesus, the Son of God, was the adopted son of Joseph, adopted into the line of the kings all of whom were sons of David.

·       Rom 1:3 was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

What the knew: The Pharisees knew the Christ or Messiah would come from the line of David or seed of David. (Mat 22:21-45)

·       V42The Son of David” Note the capital T and capital S. They believed the Christ would be the most important son of David.

·       But, they were not submitting to Jesus being the Christ

Son of David is in 10 verses of Matthew. 9 verses refer to Jesus Christ. (1:20 refers to Joseph the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus.)

 

David called Him LORD:

·       Psalm 110:1, Ps 16:8

 

Question: (Matthew 22:41-45) If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was born of a women (Mat 1:18 with Luke 1:32, 35, John 3:16), came after David and was of the same nature, a Jew and king of the Jews. Declared to be the son of David in 1:1 and seed of David in Rom 1:3.

 

**The answer: Jesus Christ, born King of the Jews (2:2) implies He existed before He was born as does “made of in Rom 1:3.

·       John 1:1, 14 was made flesh also implies pre-existence

·       The generation of Jesus Christ the pre-existence Word, concerning the Jews began in Ex 4:22; (Hosea 11:1) when Israel was declared [or adopted (Deu 7:6, Rom 9:4)] to be His first born son.

·       All Jews including David were and are of this adopted generation.

·       The generations of the kings listed in Matthew 1 came through Jesus Christ.

·       The generations of the kings began with Jesus Christ and ended with Jesus Christ. (Rev 1:8,11; 21:6; 22:13)

·       Jesus Christ is not listed among the begats of Mat 1:2-16. He was not begotten by any of these men but He was made to be (Rom 1:3).

·       1Tim 3:16 God was manifest, clearly declared.

 

Jesus, the Son of God and man, came after Abraham and David: Luke 1:35

Jesus, the Word, was before Abraham and David: Psalm 45:6; John 1:1

He was Lord of David by Divine nature and son through adoption.

·       1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

·       Re 5:5; 22:16 The root and offspring of David (Root beginning and strength, offspring came after).
