What The Wise Men Knew

 

Matthew presents Jesus Christ as King of the Jews, rejected by the Jews. The “kingdom of Heaven” is only seen in Matthew.

 

Matthew is the fortieth book of the Bible. .

·       Isa 40:1-2 Comfort was offered in Matthew to Israel through the one born King Of The Jews.

·       (3:2; 4:17) the kingdom of heaven is at hand; the King was there at hand’s length.

·       Matthew 2:17 - Jeremiah 31:15 The King’s coming first brought weeping and lamentation.

 

What the Wise Men Knew: (the wise men from the east are only seen in Matthew)

The wise men knew writings of the prophets

·       1Kings 4:29-34; 2Chr 9:23-24

·       Mat 2:3-6 & Micah 5:2; Isa 9:6 (Gen 49:6)

 

Mat 2:2a Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews?

“King of the Jews” (Matthew 4 times) (Mark 5 in Mark) (Luke 3 times) (John 5 times)

·       They knew who He was. Only in 2:2 is “King of the Jews” used to declare who Jesus was and is, the king of the people.

·       They knew “King of the Jews” was His birthright. He did not have to grow into the kingship, or be anointed by the people, he was King of the Jews at birth.

 Mat 2:2b for we have seen his star in the east

·       They had been looking for the birth of the one born “King of the Jews”. Looking for his star.

·       The knew He had been born – proof his star (Numbers 24:17;)

·       Isaiah 49:6, 60:3 Gentiles would come to him. (Jer 23:5-6)

Mat 2:2c and are come to worship him.

·       They knew He was to be worshipped

·       V2:11 they bowed in worship to the young child even though he was not in the palace of a king.

 Mat 2:11 They knew what to bring a king in worship.

·       (1Kings 10; Ps 45:6-8, 72:10; Isa 60:6, Mal 1:11)

·       Exodus 30:23,34 frankincense, and myrrh were used for anointing oils and incense to be burned at the alter of incense in tabernacle.

 

**These Gentile men knew the scripture as did the Jews; the difference was they believed and obeyed them.

 

Jesus seen as the King of the Jews.

Mt 21:2-11 (5) Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

·       Zec 9:9 ¶ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

 

In Matthew you have the kingdom of heaven parables

·       13:24; 13:31; 13:33; 13:44; 13:45; 13:47; 13:52; 18:23; 20:1; 22:2; 25:1; 25:14

The Son of Man is seen as King in his kingdom

·       13:41; 16:28; 19:28; 25:31-34

 

Jesus Worshiped As : Lord

·       8:2; 9:18; 14:33; 15:25; 20:20; 28:9,17

 

1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

 

In Matthew 27:37 The title Pilate wrote and put on the cross THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

·       Matthew does not record the objection of the chief priests as does John19:21.

·       THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

 

28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
