Where is he that is born King of the Jews?
Deuteronomy 17:14-15, 16-20
· The LORD knew the Jews would want a king just like the Gentile nations they left in the land of promise.
· The king over Israel must be chosen by the LORD and be a Jew.
· He was to have a book of the law that he would read all the days of his life
Ø 1Sa 2:10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
Who was the first king of Israel?
· Judges 8:22 the people want a king and royal line of their own choosing
· Their first choice Gideon and his generations
· Judges 8:23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.
· Judges 9 The people chooses the wicked Abimelech to be their king.
· 1Sam 10:19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
· 1Sam 12:12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.
· Before Abimelech, before Saul, the LORD their God was king of Israel.
Saul, chosen by the LORD: a king with a foolish heart
· 1Sam 13:1-12 offered burnt offerings, the role of the priest, broke the law
· 1Sa 13:13-14a Saul’s kingdom would have been forever if it were not for his foolish actions. (14a But now thy kingdom shall not continue)
David, chosen by the LORD: a king after his own heart
· 1Sa 13:14b the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, to replace Saul and be captain over His people.
King David: The everlasting kingdom
· 2Samuel 7:8-13
· 2Samuel 7:16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
· Psalm 89:2-4, 19-36 The kingdom promised David is an eternal kingdom not depending upon the righteousness of the people..
An eternal kingdom must have an eternal king.
