The Reign of Solomon

1Kings 1-11; 2Chr 1-9

1Kings 1:27 David had not declared which son would be king

·       V1:5-9 David son Adonijah sought to take the throne from David as did Absalom. 1Kings 2 After Solomon was king  Adonijah tried to gain power by deceiving Bathsheba but Solomon saw through his scheme as had him killed.

·       V27-39; 1Chr 23:1 But David declared Solomon would be king. V39 Solomon was anointed with a horn of oil as was David {while David was alive}

·       Horn speaks of power and honor and is tied to the LORD’s salvation Ps18:2

·       1Chr 29:22-25; 2Chr 1:1 The LORD magnified him exceedingly Solomon in the eyes of the people even above David.

1Kings 3:1 before he building his own house and the house for the LORD Solomon made peace with Egypt by marrying Pharaoh's daughter (IK 7:8). Later he built a house for her.

Solomon’s prayer for wisdom: 1K 3:6-9; 2Chr 1:7-9

God’s answer: 1K 3:12-14; 2Chr 1:11-12 wisdom riches and honor. [no condition with these]

·       Wealth: 1K 10:27; 2Chr 1:15, 9:27 Gold and silver as stones.

Ø    2Chr 9:13; Rev 13:8  the number 666  (1Tim 6:10)

·       Honor: 1K 4:21, 34; 2Chr 9:21-24

·       And IF thou walk in my ways than more days.

David left everything, including gold and silver, needed to build and  to furnish the LORD’s house. He amassed unto himself gold and silver as stones. Nations sent him horses, gifts, gold, silver,

What was the heavy yoke spoken of in 1Ki 12:3-4; 2Chr 10:4 .  .  . Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

·       2Chr 9:15-20 Extravagance of his spending

·       2Chr 9:15 with 2Chr 1:17: 600

Ø    Gen 7:6; Ex 14:7; Judg 18:11; 1Sam 17:7, 30:9

Ø    600 is often tied to war and death but Solomon was at peace theses shields and target were not for war but for his own glory.

·       1K4:7, 22-23

·       1K 4:26,27 40,000 stalls for horses,

·       Houses for all his wives  1K 11:3

·       Built many cities

1Kings 5: 13-16 Solomons levy of people

It appears to me instead of using his wealth for his people Solomon became obsesses with amassing stuff for himself. Deu 17:16-17

1Sam 8: 11-18 Samuels prophesy was ultimately fulfilled in the reign of Solomon. He went against every order to the kings in Deu 17:16-17, Solomon’s folly

We have seen the wisdom of Solomon.

The wisdom was turned into folly

1Kings 11

·       Ex 34:11-16; Deu 7:3-4 came true.

·       1K 11:4-8 Solomon’s heart turned from the LORD God of Israel by his wives (in his old age) and Solomon went after the Gods of his wives.

·       God stirred up adversaries against Solomon one of which was his trusted servant Jeroboam.

In 1K 11:11-12 The LORD told Solomon that He would surely rend the kingdom from his son, and will give it to thy servant.

V13 One tribe would remain with Solomon’s son and for David sake and Jerusalem’s sake.

·       Two tribes: Judah the tribe of David, Benjamin the tribal land where Jerusalem was located. Judah likely forced Benjamin to be united as one tribe
