David, Solomon, and the Temple

Deu 6:6-9; Ps 78:5-8 The law was to be taught to the children. Throughout Israel’s history the failure of the fathers to bring up their sons in the knowledge of the law was seen.

·       David exhorted Solomon to follow the law. 1Kings 2:1-4

·       I wonder what David taught his three wicked sons Amnon, Absalom, Adonijah

·       An other lesson learned by David

1Chr 22–29 David’s preparation for the building and the operation of the LORD’s house.

V22:1-5 The LORD allowed David to make all the plans and acquire all the material needed to build the temple. Solomon could not take all the credit for building the temple. Solomon could not say, “See all that I have done.”

·       Vs 22:6, 23:1 this was done before David had made Solomon king.

·       In these chapters David also began to set in order all that had been lacking in the operation of the tabernacle so after the temple was built Israel would be able to worship and serve the LORD.

·       1Chr 23-24 The Levites were numbered and divided to keep the charge of the tabernacle.

·       Ch 25-27 David left nothing to chance for Solomon. He made sure the transfer of power would go smoothly.

1Chr 28-29 David’s charge to the people and to Solomon

·       V28:8; 9-10; Ps

1Chr 28:11 David gave Solomon the plans. V19 theses plans were written by the LORD’s hand. The LORD wrote down exactly how the temple was to be built. [Ex 26:30] 1Chr 22:5

1Chr 28:14-18; 29:3-4 David gave of his own fortune to furnish the temple with all new things

1Chr 29:10-19 The Prayer of David

·       Vs 14, 16 David acknowledged what was given came from the and was the LORD’s to begin with.

·       V20, 25 they honored Solomon above David

1Chr 29:21-22 David’s unto the people and their response

·       The ark of the covenant and the tabernacle were not together [2Chr 1:2-4] when these sacrifices and offerings were made. David had set up a tent for the ark [1Chr 15:1,16:1]

·       Although these offerings were not made according to the law delivered by Moses they were accepted by the LORD. God looks upon the heart.

2Chr 3:1 ¶ Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

·       In 2Sam 24:16; 1Chr 21: 15 The angel of the LORD appeared to David in 2Chr 3:1 the LORD appeared. These verses teach when the LORD appeared to someone He was seen as the angel of the LORD.

·       Pre-incarnate Word of John 1:,14 or the pre-incarnate Jesus

·       Dan 3:25 like the Son of God just like Jesus look to those who walked with him on the earth.

1Kings 8:8; 2Ch 5:9 “And they drew out the staves of the ark” The wondering of the nation was over. The ark was in it’s permanent place.

1Kings 8:10-11; 2Ch 5:13-14, 2Chr 7:1-2 house of the LORD was filled with a cloud so that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

·       Jerusalem: God’s holy city

·       Jerusalem: the permanent place where the LORD would dwell among his people.

·       Jerusalem: the place where all Israel was to come and worship the LORD. The place where sacrifices were to be made.

Oncs the temple was built God offered Israel the opportunity to  worship God through the dispensation of the law in the land of promise. Israel had the opportunity to be the witness to the Gentile nations spoken of in Deu 4:7-8.

2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2Chr 6:24

·       This had to be done in Jerusalem.
