The Reign Of David Part 3

2Sam24; 1C 21;

1Sam 24:1 The LORD moved David; 1Chr 21:1 Satan provoked David; because the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel.

David ordered Joab to number the people.

Many site the reason for the God’s judgment was David did not require the tax.  Ex 30:12.

*God did not order the numbering of the people and David did not enquire of the LORD in this matter.

·       2Sam 2:1, 5:19 David asked, “Shall I go up”. When David wanted to build the temple he spoke to the LORD’s prophet Here did not enquire of the LORD

·       The Pride of David 2Sam 21:2; 1Chr 24:2.

·       At this point most of Israel’s enemies had been subdued.

·       Was David giving the size of his army as the reason for all the victories, claiming the victory for himself instead of for the LORD of hosts?

Deu 1:11 God values the Jews far above all other nations. It is not the number that made Israel strong it was the LORD.

Joab knew [2Sam 24:3; 1Chron 21:3].

**Note the difference in the multiplier, from 1000 down to 100.

Joab’s response [1S24:3;1C21:3] why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? Trespass is invading areas that are only the LORD’s. They are the LORD’s people not David’s; victory’s glory belong to the LORD of hosts.

1Sam 21:10; 1Chr 21:17 David’s confession plea.

The LORD gave David three choices for judgment [2S21:13; 1C 21:12] David chose to place his kingdom in the hand of the LORD for 3 days [Ps6:1, 89:14]. David knew God’s hand would be just and not go too far. 70,000 men died of the pestilence. Many more would have died in the other two choices.

The LORD stopped the judgment before Jerusalem was destroyed.

The angel of the LORD stood by the threshing floor of Araunah, better know as Ornan. David bought the threshing floor, [1S4:24] and also the land around it [1Chr21:25]. This is the place Solomon built the temple [2Chr 3:1]

It was David who sinned but 70,000 men died from the pestilence.

·       1 Sam 24:1 The LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, so the LORD allowed Satan to provoke David to sin in this matter and bring chastisement upon His nation.

·       To humble the nation before him, Make Deu 1:11 again.

God did not allow David to build the temple, but He did allow 1Chr 22–29. David to make all the plans and acquire all the material needed to build the temple. 1Chr 29:3-4 David gave of his own fortune.

·       When David began to reign over all Israel the tabernacle had been polluted. The arc was removed by Saul’s orders and was kept in houses. 1Sam 6:19 50,070 men died because they looked inside the ark. The proper order of sacrifice was not being followed.

·       In these chapters David began to set in order the sons of Aaron and the duties of the Levites.
