The Reign Of David Part 2

After David established Jebus as the City of David, the stronghold of Zion, Jerusalem 2Sam 5:10 says he grew great and the LORD God of hosts was with him.

·       2Sam 5:12 David understood his greatness was not his own doing but was because of the LORD of hosts.

Ø    1Sam 17:45 LORD of hosts, God of the armies of Israel.

Ø    The LORD’s host: 2Kings 6:17. This was the army ready to fight for an obedient nation of Israel.

1Chron 1- 9 contain the genealogies of the nation of Israel. Consider 1Chron 9:1 with Gen 10:32 and Deu 32:8 [Gen 15:18] and Acts 17:26 When God divided the nations at the tower of Babble, before Abraham He had the area Israel’s inheritance..

*When David established his throne of this kingdom. What was he to do? Deu 17:18-19a   Write him a copy of the law  and read it all the days of his life {every day}.

The reason he was to do this in made clear in Deu 17:19b-20

David brought the ark of the tabernacle to Jerusalem

*2Sam 6:1-11; 1Chron 13: The first time on a new cart. What was David’s part in his death of Uzzah? The ark was never to be touched. The ark should not have been carried on a cart. Ex 25:14-15 It was to be carried by the staves upon the shoulders of Levites.

*2Sam 6:12-18; 1Chron 15:1-15 The second time: David had the Levites bare the ark as demanded in the law and placed it in the tabernacle David had pitched. A lesson learned.

The Holy Spirit had David write in Psalm 2 Why do the heathen rage and imagine a vain thing against the LORD’s anointed.

From Acts 4:25 we know this psalm was prophesying the heathen raging against the Lord Jesus Christ without reason. Notice how David may have understood this psalm to be about himself.

*2Sam 5:17 the bloody nature of David’s reign is seen in the change of attitude the Philistines had for David. In 1Sam 29 David was a considered a trusted servant of Achish, the Philistines king . Once David was the LORD’s anointed king of Israel he was seen as a hated enemy{without cause}.

*2Sam 10 David was going to shew kindness to the children of Ammon. V10:3 But they perceived this to be David plan to overthrow them {without cause}.

·       The Gentile nations never saw how the world could be blessed through David’s reign.

Acts 4:25 The world only imagines that Jesus Christ is the enemy, not that the world was offered blessing through Him.

We ask why do nations rage {without cause}against the gospel

In 2Sam 8, 21 and 1Chron 18, 20 the battles of David’s reign are listed, including the Philistines giants. God gave the nations of Israel great victories through David.

2Sam 5:13; 1Chron 14:3. David went against De 17:17 and multiplied wives unto himself.

2Sam 11:1-12:7a - David lust caused him to desire Bathsheba. His pride led to the murder of Uriah the Hittite, one of Davids mighty men of valor (2Sam 23:39; 1Chron 11:41) [1Kings 15:5]

·       V11:1 time kings go forth to war except David

·       V11:6 Uriah had to be called from battle

In 2Sam 12 Nathan is sent by the LORD to David and he let David know his wickedness in the matter of Uriah the Hittite was known.

·       (V7a “Thou art the man”)

·       V14 his act was known by the enemies compare with Deu 4:6-8 instead of giving the heathen reason to praise God David gave them reason to despise Him, blaspheme

·       12:7b-8 The LORD would have given David much more

V12:9-10 The outcome of David despising the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight (David willfully and knowingly chose to do evil):

·       The child died

·       War filled his reign

·       The Lord raised up evil against David within his house.

Ø    Absalom desire to dethrone David his father and take the kingdom. And his other wicked sons.

2Sam 12:13 David’s confession and God’s grace; He put away his sin and spared his life. [Lev 20:10] But the consequences of his sin remained and all Israel witnessed David’s chastisement from the LORD. Ps 51:11-12 King David never acknowledged the Spirit of God until he felt he was about to loose Him.

Psalm 6, 38, 51

What we learn from David

2Sam 12:23 (Job 3:11-16) Christian parents who loose an infant are assured they will go to be with them.

Our sins are removed but God may not remove the consequences.

What is done in private may not be private and may unknowingly cause the name of Christ to be blasphemed in the world.
