David Through The Psalms

While each psalm is directly related to a specific time and event in psalmist life, the book of psalms is also prophetic in nature.

·       Ps 1:5 with Rev 21:27 {they will not be standing at the great white throne judgment they will be bowing down before the Christ}

·       Ps 22 the suffering of Christ is foretold [Mr 15:34]

Psalm: a poem set to notes, made into a song. They are more than poems they are prayers to God.

·       15 psalms are identified as songs [18:1, 108:1]

75 of the 150 psalms are attributed to David.

Psalms; 3-9; 11-31; 34-41; 51-65; 68-70; 86; 101; 103; 108-110; 122; 124; 131; 133; 138-145

Psalm 2 (Acts 4:25) & Psalm 95 (Heb 4:7)

Psalms of David are quoted in the New Testament [Acts 1:16-Ps 41:9; 2:25-Ps16:9; 4:25-Ps 2:1; 13:35-Ps16:10] [Rom 4:7-Ps 32:1, Rom 11:9-69:23; Heb 4:7-Ps 95:7]

The psalms of David are mostly his prayers to the LORD. Many were public praising of the LORD others were private prayers he had set to music. They all lead to worship and magnifying His name to any one who reads them.

In 1Ch 29:11 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all

·       1Chron 17:19,21; Psalm 145:2; Mt 6:13

The psalms magnify the LORD God, His name and His word.

Magnify in seen in five psalms; all psalms of David.

34:3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

Ps 69:30 ¶ I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

In 35:26, 38:16, & 55:12 (others magnified themselves against David, the LORD’s anointed) (38:1 when David slipped he gave the heathen the opportunity to blaspheme 2Sam 12:14)

Magnified is in four psalms also all psalms of David.

Psalms 35:27, 40:16, 70:4 The LORD and God be magnified

Psalm 138:2 The LORD has magnified His word above His name.

The first psalm attributed to David is Psalm 2 “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? .  .  . take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed

When the Holy Spirit had David write this psalm David would have thought it was about himself, the anointed king.

Acts 4:25-26 teaches this is about the worlds raging against the Lord’s Christ. Jesus Christ the LORD’s anointed.

When His Christ and His word are magnified before the heathen they will rage against Him. God’s righteousness will always cause wickedness to be exposed.

As you read the psalms attributed to David you read of a man tired of being hounded by his enemies (Saul and his servants). David peace comes to him through magnifying the LORD. Selah is in 35 verses in 20 of the psalms of David.

·       Selah is considered as a musical rest.

·       Selah is a point that the reader should pause and reflect about what was written.

·       **Selah is also prophetic, pointing to the future when Israel will be truly at rest from it’s enemies. This will be start when the Son of God will sit upon his throne on the earth and reign for 1000 years.

First seen; Ps 3:2,4,8 David when he fled from his son Absalom.

V2: when it looked to others that the LORD had abandoned David and maybe David began to think that. Selah: stop, reflect than V3.

·       Israel during the tribulation the world will be telling them there is no hope for you in God, stop think back than V3.

V4 David cried unto the one his shield, his glory, the lifter up of his head. He magnified the LORD in his heart. Stop, reflect V5-6 rest came even when ten thousands of people sought to kill him.

·       During the tribulation the LORD will hear the saved of Israel and they will be kept safe until the rest from the LORD comes to them. Psalm 23

V8 Stop and remember, Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people

·       Israel during the tribulation, stop and reflect salvation and blessing from the Lord is coming.

In his distress David learned not to trust in vain things. His own means always failed. He sang praises to the LORD.

·       Ps 34:1 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. [1Thes 5:16]

·       Not thanking the Lord for the problems, thanking him for who he is.

*This seems as a good plan for us when we experience hard times. Stop, reflect on what he Lord has done and magnify His name.
