1Sam 15:28 The kingdom was rent from Saul

1Sam 15:35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until his death.

Ch16:1-13 the introduction of David and the horn of oil kingdom.

·       Note: V13 David was anointed in the midst of his brethern

·       1Kings 1:39 Continued with Solomon

·       Horn: power, authority, glory, honor, dignity: the first thing noticed on an animal. La 2:17;  Ps 75:4; Job 16:15

Ch17 The account of David killing Goliath of Gath, the champion of the Philistines.

·       The character of David is introduced: Vs26,29,37,45

Ø    The cause upholding the name of the LORD.

·       V47 with V13:19, 22 explains why the LORD had Philistines remove the blacksmiths from the land of Israel.

·       Vs55-58 When David returned from killing Goliath Saul did not know who he was. Ch16:14-23 must have taken place after David killed the giant.

·       V14-15 David went with his older brothers to join Saul in battle. David returned to his father’s sheep, but his brothers followed Saul not David. Remember V16:13

V16:14-15 The Spirit of God was taken from Saul and the LORD sent an evil spirit or devil to trouble Saul. Satan and his angles are at God’s disposal.  [Eph 4:30; 6:12] Pr 16:4

·       God used this evil spirit to bring David and Saul closely together. [V21] Saul made David his armourbearer.

·       Ch18 Begins with Saul loving David, the souls of David and Jonathan knit together and are as one. V4 Jonathan give his birthright to David.

·       Saul makes David a captain and David leads in the slaughter of the Philistines and the women gave more honor to David than Saul. V8-9 Saul was very wroth and Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

·       Vs 10-11 Saul failed attempt kill David with a Javelin.

·       V21, 25 Saul sends David to what he believes will be his death; to get 100 foreskins of the Philistines as the condition to be able to take Saul’s daughter Michal to wife. Saul’s attempt to send David to his death failed and given his wife. 

·       V29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.

 

From this point on Saul was obsessed with killing David.

He used his servants, tried to Jonathan, tried to use Michal to deceive David.

 

Ch23:14 .   .  .   And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.

Ch 20:33 And Saul cast a javelin at him {jonathan} to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

Ch 27:4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him
