28 Samuel And Saul Part 1

Ch8 Samuel’s wicked sons fueled the fire for their desire to reject the LORD as their King; they became their excuse, not the reason.

·       The reason: 1Sa 8:7-8 they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me .  .   .  and they have forsaken me.

Ø    Deu 32:17, chose gods that did not demand fear

·       Vs9-22 Samuel’s prophetic statement concerning what the king will do was rejected by the people and the LORD tells Samuel to give them what they asked for {deserved}.

Ø    De 18:15,18-19: When they rejected his words the LORD gave them what they deserved - - Saul.

·       V18 Prophesy of that day: A day would comewhen the people would cry out to the LORD over their king, but the LORD would choose not to hear their plea.

Ø    Prov 1:24-33; Isa 1:15; Jer 11:11; 14:12; Eze 8:18; Mic 3:4; Zec 7:13

Ch9 The LORD chose Saul

·       V2 What the people saw in Saul; he was goodlier everyone, stood out in a crowd. V21 What Saul felt about being chosen: a Benjaminite, the least of the tribes

·       Vs3-7 Saul is seen as an obedient son, concerned with his father’s property.

·       The providence of God: Saul’s obedient search for his father’s asses brought him to the prophet Samuel who was waiting for the LORD to show him the man who would be the king of Israel. V15-17

·       V27 still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

Ø    Shew is not just a sight word, It is spoken and often accompanied with an action. Make clear [Dan 2:6]

Ch10 The word Samuel shewed Saul: Saul chosen by the LORD be captain of over the LORD’s inheritance.

·       The LORD’s inheritance: Ex 15:17-18, 34:9; Ps 132:13 The land of promise and he children of Israel. [Deu 32:8]

·       V1 The LORD had Samuel anoint Saul with a vile of oil

Ø    1Sam 16:1,13 The LORD had Samuel anoint David with a horn full of oil

Ø    Saul’s house would reign for only a short period of time; David’s house would reign for ever.

·       V9 God gave Saul another heart:

Ø    Concerned with what lied ahead not his father’s asses

Ø    Be humble not goodlier

Ø    V10-12 the heart of a prophet led by the Spirit of the LORD

Ø    His role was to be both judge and prophet

·       V17-24 Samuel introduced Saul to the people

·       V25 Samuel reminded the people of “the manner of the kingdom” and this time he recorded it in a book and laid it before the LORD. The people could not get away saying they did not know what the manner of kingdom would be.

·       V26 Through Samuel’s words the LORD touched the hearts of a band of men, just a small group, probably of the tribe of Benjamin who followed Saul.

·       V27 The “children of Belial” most of the other tribes rejected Saul, the man chosen by the LORD

Ch11 The “other” heart kicks in.

·       Saul is plowing in the field not concerned about being captain of the LORD’s inheritance.

·       V1-2 the Ammonites came against the men{Jews}of Jabesh to force them agree {a covenant}be their servants. The seal of this covenant was that the Ammonites would thrust out the right eyes of the men of Jabesh as a reproach upon all Israel hat is let all Israel know you will serve Ammon.

·       V3-5 Messengers of Jabesh go throughout all Israel and some go to Saul.

·       V6-7 The Spirit of the LORD comes upon Saul and the heart of an angry king takes over. Saul chops up his oxen and sent the pieces throughout all Israel and tells the sons of Belial who rejected him you have no choice but to accept him as their king and follow him and Samuel or pay the consequences.

Ø    The fear of the LORD caused the people to come out, with one consent, for Saul.

Ø    The manner of the king serve the king or die.

·       Vs8-11 Saul led to a great victory

·       V12-13 The people now {the band of men V6} “Those who did not want Saul to be king should be put to death.” But Saul  decreed no one was to die because the LORD wrought salvation in Israel.

Ø    Wrought a strong version of brought – The LORD forced salvation to come to Israel.

·       V14-15 all the people made Saul king and rejoiced

Ø    Did they now feel they had a king of their own choosing?

Note: The LORD anointed Saul to be captain, the people made him king. A captain answers to a higher authority a king has no authority over him, no one to answer to.
