Orders To The King

Judges 17:6, 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

·       1Sam 8:5 make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

·       The LORD knew they would desire a man to be king over them. Deu 17:14 ¶ When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;

·       Deu 17:15: .  .  . Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose

 

Orders To he Kings

·       Deu 17:16-17 The king was not to multiply horses, wives and wealth.

·       De 17:18-20 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:

Ø    De 31:9, 24-26

·       He was to trust in the LORD not on horses or gold and silver. [Isa 31:1]. He was to be the servant of the LORD not the servant of his wealth

·       His heart was to be set upon the LORD and not turned to many wives.

·       If the kings had concentrated on the copy of the law they were to write and obeyed the LORD they wouldn’t have needed horses and chariots the LORD would have fought for them. There would have been no reason to amass great wealth, the LORD would have provided. [Pr 16:8

·       ]

2 Samuel 23:1-7 David’s last words concerning the king

·       V3 He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. [remember Deu 32:17 they wanted gods they did not have to fear]

·       1King 2:3-4 David’s charge to Solomon

·       Pr 29:4 ¶ The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

 

Ro 13:3-4 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. .  .  .  . for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

·       Proverbs 16:12;

·       Pr 20:8 “scattereth away all evil with his eyes”: his hatred of evil should be seen in his eyes. [20:26]

·       The wicked should fear the look in the kings’ eyes.

·       Evil should not be able to stand before their king.

 

To Judge often meant to plead the cause for.

The King and the poor

Pr 29:14 The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

Ps 72:2 ¶He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.

·       Ps 72:2,4,13-14;

·       Remember the role of the kinsman redeemer. Could it be that the king was to enforce this obligation?

Pr 20:28  Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Isa 32:1  Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

 

In Deu 17:15 The LORD would choose their king.

The king the children of Israel wanted.

·       They wanted Gideon and his sons to rule over them

·       They set Abimelech as their king: not chosen by the LORD

·       They wanted Samuel to choose the king [8:5]

·       They did not want the LORD the rule over them [1Sam 8:7]

·       They did not want Saul whom the LORD chose.

Ø    1Sam 10:27; 11:12

·       They did not want David whom the LORD chose.

Ø    2Sam 2:8-11

·       They rejected Jesus Christ, the Holy One and the Just

Ø    Acts 3:14-15, 24

The children of Israel never wanted a king chosen by the LORD.

 

1Sa 8:5 .  .  . now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

1Sa 8:20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

·       They did not want the LORD to plead for them

·       They did not want a king who knew the law [De 17:18-20]

·       They wanted a king who knew not the LORD just like the heathens

 

Psalm 45: The king Israel should have always desired. The king all other kings of Israel should have pointed to. The King Israel will be blesses with.

·       Rev 1:14, 2:18, 19:12 the eyes of their King.
