Judges Part 2 A Chronological View Of Judges

*****The two generations of Judges: 2:7 and 2:10

Gen 2 gives more information about the creation that is added on after Genesis 1

The study the kings of Israel must include 1,2 Kings; 1,2 Chronicles and the prophets.

The New Testament continues this. To get the complete picture of Christ’s life on the earth you have to read all four gospels.

Why didn’t the Holy Spirit, as we would, list everything in chronological order?

·       Acts 17:11: The Holy Spirit knew we would learn more from the scriptures if we had to search them to find connections.

Chronological View Of Judges

#1: 2:1-7,        #2: 2:7-9, 1:1-36,       #3: 10:9, Chs 19-21

#4: 2:10-3:7       #5: Chs 17-18      #6: 3:8-16:31

Jg 2:1-5  “an angel of the LORD” [V1] who was “the angel of the LORD” [V4] the One who made them go out of Egypt [V1] was the LORD Jehovah. He came and spoke unto all the children of Israel. {The “and” of V6 ties this to Joshua Chs 24 when he called all the tribes to Shechem between Mt. Gerizim and Ebal.} [Josh 8:30 with Deu 27:11]

·       V3 Because they made leagues with the nations [Josh 9:15] and did not break down their idols The LORD was not going to drive them out but was going to leave the nations among Israel to prove them

·       When the people {the 2:7 gen] heard the words of the LORD they cried and wept. They call the place Bochim{weeping}.

·       Shechem, the place between the two mountains where the curses were spoken by the Levites, the place where Joshua sent the tribes out to their inheritance became a place of weeping.

Jgs 2:6-7 ¶ And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land. [Josh 24:28]

Jgs 2:8-9 Joshua’s death [Josh 24:29]

Jgs 1:1-36 After Joshua’s death there were battles to be fought. The tribe of Judah, chosen by the LORD, led in these battles.

·       V1:11 Othniel “the younger brother" of Caleb” Brother does not always mean of the same parents. Gen 14:16 Lot is called Abram’s brother. {Near kin or the tribes of Israel are called brothers}

·       While the first account this battle is told in Josh 15:15-17 it had to occur after Joshua’s death. Othniel [3:9] is also the first judge raised up to deliver Israel. He would have been of the generation of Ch 2:10. He would have been born after they crossed the Jordon River, after the death of Joshua because Caleb was in charge.

Jgs Chapters 19-21, 10:9

 After the death of Caleb but before the 2:10 Gen had all died. TYhis was likely the last war before the 2:10 generation arose [3:1].

·       Jg 20:28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, Helps place this portion of scripture before the times of the judges. Eleazar was under 20 years old when the crossed the Red Sea. Phinehas his son would have been a baby or born in the wilderness [Num 31:6] among the 2:7 generation..

·       Jg 19: 1 ¶ And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel. {Note: “those days” shows will happen again}

·       This was the 2:7 generation that served the LORD. They were going to fight to clean the 19:30 activity out of the land

·       The men of Jebus {sons of Belial} come to his house.

·       Compare Vs19:22-30 [Gen 19:4-5].

·       The Ephraimite’s wife dies from the treatment of the men of Jebus. He seeks all the tribes of Israel to avenge his wife’s death. [19:30]

·       Ch 20 All the tribes of Israel send soldiers to go against Jebus. {Including Dan} The tribe of Benjamin stood to defend the city [Jebus] and sons of Belial.

·       Benjamin stood to protect the, Sodomites. Ch 20:47-48 The LORD chose Phinehas to lead the war.

·       And the world today tries to teach the Bible says nothing against homosexuality.

·       They were determined to wipe out the entire tribe of Benjamin. After the last battle only 600 men remained. When they burned the cities of Benjamin they killed all the Benjamite women and children. . [Ch 20:47-48, 21:16]

Ch 21 Rest of the children of Israel decide not to give their daughters to the 600 remaining men of the tribe of Benjamin so the tribe will not remain.

·       V6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

They also were destroyed Jabeshgilead because they did not send men to fight any fight against the Benjamites. They kept alive 400 virgins that were given to the 600 men left of Benjamin. They also allowed the men to steal other women from Shiloh.

·       They LORD saved Benjamin from being wiped out by allowing a remnant to escape. Allowed Jebus to survive and become Jerusalem, the daughter of Zion. Jerusalem Isa 1:8-10 Likened to Sodom and Gomorrah in Isaiah 1:10

·       The LORD did not allow then to completely wipe out Benjamin.
