Deuteronomy

De 1:3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them; In Deuteronomy Moses is speaking to the generation that came out of Egypt that was 19 years old and under (the generation numbered in Num 26). They were to receive the inheritance [V26:54].

Ch 29:10-13 the nation numbered in Num 26:51-53 on the verge of entering the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Ch 1:4-Ch 8 He begins recalling all that happened during the journey from Egypt. Many of this generation did not witness the crossing of the Red Sea or what happened to those who came against the LORD, Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. See V8:1

Ch 9 Moses exhorted them to trust in the LORD Vs3-6. They were not chosen because of who they were but in spite of who they were.

Ch 11:18- They were to lay up the words of Moses in their hearts and teach their children

Ch 12 They were commanded to destroy the gods of the nations and the ‘”high paces” and only worship where the LORD chose.

Chs 13-16 Moses continues to restate the law.

Ch 17:14 The LORD’s commandment for the kings:

·       Isa 31:1 ¶ Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

·       The downfall of Solomon: He saw no need to trust in the LORD for anything. He trusted in himself and himself failed him. Gal 6:3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

·       The nation of Israel was nothing without trusting in the LORD their God.

Chs 18-26 Moses continued to exhort the people to trust in the LORD. Cities of refuse, battlements to be upon their roofs (22:8).

·       Vs 22: 9-11 Show how Israel was to be a people separate from other nations. They were not to mix their clothing, their food or their beasts of burden. Consider Deu 6:4 the LORD God is one LORD in these statutes.

27 The first place of worship was to be set up the very day they crossed over the Jordon River. Worshipping the LORD was to be the first thing they were to do through building an altar with the words of the law written upon it.

·       V11-26 Levites were to declare a curse upon those who did not keep the commandments and demand everyone to agree. These verses lead to chapters 28-30

Ch 28 The choice Israel would have to make once in the land.

·       V1 if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day

Ø    V2 all these blessings [Vs3-14] shall come on thee, and overtake thee [overtake not able to get away from]

·       V15a if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day

·       V5b all these curses [Vs16-44] shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: The opposite of the blessings

·       V45-68 Moreover: The prophesy of being overrun by a gentile nation and all that would happen while under it’s control. {We now this came about during the 70 captivity of Babylon and will come again after the rapture of the church.}

Ch 29 Moses exhorts the people to consider all the LORD did before their eye during the last 40 years. Why, V9 to choose the blessings of 28:3-14

·       V29 [Isa 45:11] The LORD God knows all things. He knew the children of Israel inside and out. Nothing they did took him by surprise. In Chs 28 and 29 He revealed secrete things that only He knew that they would do the words of the law: choose the blessings.

Ch 30:1 God’s grace revealed to His people. When the blessings come upon them and the curses come upon them they should recall those things God revealed to them spoken of in V29:29.

V2-3 They return to the LORD and obey His voice, than the LORD will restore them V7 and put the curses upon their enemies

·       His voice: Moses and the future judges, the prophets.

Am 9:10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.

Am 9:13 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. [Eze 34:26]

Ch 31 The time of the death of Moses is close

·       V9-26 Moses wrote a copy of the law and commanded it be read before all the people every seven years. It was to be kept in the side of the ark.

·       V28-30 Moses’s grim prophesy of the future of Israel after his death:  They would utterly corrupt selves and anger he LORD.

Ch 32 Moses explained the Rock and the nation’s rejection of Him.

Ch 33 Moses blessed the people

Ch 34 The death of Moses after he is shown the land of Canaan by the LORD
