Brief Survey of Leviticus

The law and the dispensations

·       Mans’ ability to worship God through the dispensations of innocence, conscience, and human government ended because they perceived in their heart that God was not exalted as head of above all.

·       The dispensation of the promise was made to Abraham’s seed not the gentile nations. Israel failed to worship God through the promise because of how they perceived in their heart that God would not keep His promise but brought them out of Egypt so they would die in the wilderness.

The dispensation of the law to Israel offered them the opportunity to worship Him dealt with

·       Conscience: what sin is, payment for sin must be made and the payment must be without blemish

·       Human government: Le 26:12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 1Sam 12:12

Le 27:34 These are the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai

Le 26:46 These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.

·       Within “the law” were commandments, statutes, judgments and laws

·       The law was a two-sided covenant [Ex 19:5; Deu 6:1-3]

·       The law was complete: Deu 4:2

The land was promised to the seed of Abraham. Once they possessed the land the law offered them permanent possession.

·       Le 20:22 ¶ Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out.

·       Lev 18:5; Josh 22:5; Ps 78:10 “The law” was the spiritual boundary of the land of promise.

·       Transgress is to go over or beyond the boundary of the law. Consider the trespass offering.

Ex 25:16 And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee.

·       Heb 9:4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

Ex 38:21 ¶ This is the sum of the tabernacle, even of the tabernacle of testimony, as it was counted, according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, son to Aaron the priest.

De 31:26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

Ch1:1- 5 The burnt offering, the meat offering, the trespass offering, sin offering, all allowing the Jews to receive forgiveness for a specific sin and offer worship the LORD would accept. All are pictures of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ showing the death of Christ washed away every individual sin.

Ch 6-7 Laws [Le 26:46] for each offering and sacrifice [burnt, sin, trespass, peace]

Ch 8-10 Orders for the priest and consequences for disobedience of the priests.

Ch11 The law of the clean and unclean beasts: Restricting Israel’s diet from what they ate in Egypt. The people were not only brought out of the land Egypt, God was bringing them out of the ways of the Egyptians. [Vs44-45]

Ch 16 The Annual day of atonement for the collective sin of the nation showing Christ shed his blood for collective sin of the world.

·       Study Leviticus 16 and you learn all Christ had to fulfill on his walk to the cross, while his body was upon the cross, and after He rose from the dead.

·       Eph 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Ch 12-15;17-27 Various statutes and the judgment upon whosoever broke those statutes.

·       Childbirth, hygiene, leprosy, the last five commandments are dealt with.

·       Rules for agriculture and servitude

·       The abominations of the Egyptians and the nations of the land of Canaan are seen in these chapters. [devil worship, child sacrifice, sodomy, incest, beastiality, ect.]

Ø    You learn why the LORD commanded that those nations to be destroyed; Israel was to cleanse the land of Canaan from these nations. Lev 18:1-3

Ga 3:24-5 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Praise God that we are no longer under the judgments of the law.
